10/28/2006: Product Review: HKS Knock off Blow off Valve

I finally found some times to install the new hotpipe and blow off valve. It made the engine bay a lot nicer and cleaner. I was quite skeptical about those knock off parts on ebay. I hear a lot of people say they suck, they leak and they will break. I am going to have to disassemble one of these and compare it to a real one just to see the difference.

Here is the chamber side of the blow off valve. Notice the casting rough edges that hasn't been cleaned up. It probably doesn't matter too much since I am only using it to expel air to avoid compressor surge. Before installation, I did a very simple leak test by filling it up water. No leak was detected but that cannot be compared to boost pressure.

I also notice that the knock off valve does not have an interchangeable whistle up front. It's cast together with the outer shell. That just too bad because I want it to squeal like a pig on blow off. I will just have to settle with  the Tokyo drift "Peeeshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" instead.

My first impression on the drive was good. It has the ricey blow off valve sound and it holds pressure just fine. the sound lets me know that air is blowing out of the valve. Time will only tell how well this unit is made. I suspect it will keep working just fine.
